Apollo 15 Promotional Poster

Apollo 15 Promotional Poster

Promotional Poster for Apollo 15, which was the first to use a Lunar Roving Vehicle. The print shows the three crew members Alfred M. Worden, David R. Scott, and James B. Irwin above a motif of the Lunar Roving Vehicle.

The document was produced as part of the Manned Flight Awareness programme. NASA set up the Manned Flight Awareness programme in 1963 to raise standards and motivate its staff and the staff of its various contractors, promoting flight safety. Attention to detail and high standards were critical in ensuring that the components that would take humans to the Moon were of the highest quality and not likely to fail. The Manned Flight Awareness programme used posters like this one, as well as leaflets, films, awards, and an array of collectibles to raise awareness and motivate staff.

Apollo 15 was the fourth successful Moon landing and the first of the Apollo “J” missions. These later Apollo missions focused on scientific discovery, which was made possible by longer stays and greater mobility across the lunar surface. This was achieved with the help of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, which allowed the astronauts to travel much greater distances. The objectives of Apollo 15 were to explore the Hadley-Apennine region, set up and activate lunar surface scientific experiments, make engineering evaluations of new Apollo equipment, and conduct lunar orbital experiments and photographic tasks. At the time, NASA called it the most successful crewed flight ever achieved.
