Apollo 16 Mission Patch

Apollo 16 Mission Patch

The crew of Apollo 16 had several basic ideas they wanted to incorporate to commemorate their mission: patriotism, teamwork, and the Moon. They also wanted to include the mission number and the names of the crew.

A NASA graphic artist, Barbara Matelski, took their ideas and designed a patch which incorporated everything they wanted. To show patriotism, a brown and white eagle with wings outstretched, perches on a red, white, and blue American shield. The teamwork element is portrayed by the yellow chevron symbol, which is a design element of the official NASA logo. The grey lunar surface makes up the background.

The names of the crew YOUNG, MATTINGLY, and DUKE appear in the blue and gold border with sixteen white stars to emphasise outer space and the number of the mission. Charlie Duke later recounted how proud the crew were of the patch and how well they felt it represented the mission.
