Life Magazine 23 June 1969

The Apollo programme had many highlights and it provided magazines of the time with a lot of subject matter. This edition of Life magazine focused on the dress rehearsal for the Moon landing – Apollo 10. The Apollo 10 mission allowed NASA the chance to test out the necessary systems for landing on the Moon, without actually landing. The Lunar Module descended to within 16 kilometres of the Moon’s surface, before ascending back up to re-join the Command Module. The success of the mission allowed NASA to confidently send Apollo 11 on its historic journey two months later.

Apollo 10 managed to capture some of the best photographs and colour videos ever taken of the Moon. Life magazine whet the imagination for an enraptured public, becoming a must have for any space enthusiast. Within less than a month of this magazine’s publication, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon with the whole world watching.

Life was an American magazine that ran until 2007. Time magazine founder, Henry Luce, purchased Life in 1936. Originally a general interest magazine, Luce converted Life to focus more on photojournalism – the images sent back from Apollo 10 were a perfect fit for a front cover feature.
