Eugene Cernan served as back up Spacecraft Commander for Apollo 14. This black and white photograph shows Cernan during EVA training in preparation for the mission.

For each Apollo mission three astronauts were assigned as the prime crew, with a further three astronauts forming the backup crew. The backup crew would be ready to step in and perform the role of their counterparts in the prime crew should they be unable to fly. Therefore, it was necessary for the backup crew to receive the same training as the prime crew, to ensure they were equally prepared to perform the mission.

Cernan went on to Command the Apollo 17 mission. He was the last person to enter the Lunar Module before take off, earning him the distinction of being the last person to have stood on the Moon.
