Russian Space Food – "Stelutsa" Fruit Dessert

Russian Space Food – "Stelutsa" Fruit Dessert

This is an example of the kind of food that was eaten by cosmonauts on the Russian space station Mir. Foods that are ready to eat such as fruit bars, nuts and biscuits are classified as natural form foods. They are vacuumed packed to keep them fresh and eaten as they, with no need for additional preparation.

Space travel poses considerable challenges when it comes to eating. Food must be light-weight and compact, stay fresh for extended periods of time and must be easy to consume in microgravity. Stray crumbs or excess liquid could spell disaster. Perhaps most importantly the food must provide the necessary calories and nutrients required by the astronauts. All this and the food must still be pleasant to eat.
