Attitude Control Thruster

Attitude Control Thruster

A typical style of thruster used in attitude control for spacecraft and satellites. Spacecraft often need to maintain or alter their position when in orbit. Thrusters like this one are positioned on a space vehicle to control the attitude, which essentially means to help maintain the vehicles orientation compared to the object that it is orbiting – for example the Earth.

Using a series of these thrusters (pointing in different directions) it is possible to provide thrust in whatever direction is necessary to orientate the space vehicle the way required. These thrusters work when a chemical reaction causes an exothermic reaction – with the energy produced impacting on the motion of the spacecraft.
