NASA photograph of the crew of Apollo 11 – (left to right) Neil Armstrong, Commander; Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot; and Buzz Aldrin, Lunar Module Pilot. Apollo 11 was the first mission to land humans on the Moon.On 20 July 1969, Armstrong and Aldrin made history by taking the first steps on the lunar surface, while Michael Collins remained in orbit around the Moon in the Command Module.
In the photograph the crew pose in front of an image of the Moon, wearing their A7-L spacesuits without the gloves and helmet. The spacesuits kept Armstrong and Aldrin alive while they were outside the spacecraft on the lunar surface. They were also designed to be worn during unpressurised spacecraft operation.
