Challenger Vehicle Registration Plate

Challenger Vehicle Registration Plate

Commemorative Challenger vehicle registration plate. Metal rectangle number plate with Florida APD 762 Challenger written on it and an image of the shuttle launching. Following the Challenger Shuttle disaster of 28 January 1986, in which all 7 crew members were tragically killed after the Shuttle broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, the state of Florida began issuing speciality license plates to raise funds for the Astronauts' Memorial.

The idea of charging an additional fee for speciality license plates caught on quickly, with the proceeds going to various goodwill causes. Worthy causes have included universities, manatees and Florida based sports teams, with over $600 million raised in the program’s history. License plates dedicated to Challenger and also Columbia (the second Shuttle disaster, which occurred on 1 February 2003), are still available to purchase, with proceed being split between the Astronaut Memorial Foundation and the Technological Research and Development Authority.
