Coin Collection Commemorating 'Man in Flight'
Coin Collection Commemorating 'Man in Flight'
Complete set of 16 commemorative coins produced by Shell to mark the success of Apollo 11 in 1969. Each coin marks a significant moment in the history of flight, with a brief explanation provided on the reverse of the presentation card the coins fit into. Events include the first ever flight by the Wright brothers, Sputnik 1, Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight, and Apollo 11.This collector’s item was a promotional tool completed in conjunction with fuel purchases, allowing customers the chance to collect all of the coins – similar to those produced to mark sporting events such as the World Cup. It highlights the public interest in the Apollo programme at the time, with similar versions to this UK one produced throughout Europe.
