ESA European Space Agency Patch
ESA European Space Agency Patch
This ESA patch depicts the European Space Agency's logo, which was first introduced in 1975.The central part of the patch is ESA's logo, with a lower case 'e' surrounded by concentric lines in a circular shape. The circular shape represents the Earth, whilst the lower case 'e' sits where Europe would be on the globe. The 'e' also stands for Earth, Europe, and ESA. A small dot to the left represents a satellite. The concentric lines give the impression of a fingerprint, which is to represent ESA's science missions as well as human spaceflight.
The flags around the edge of the patch are from the member states that officially made up ESA at the time. As different countries officially joined at different times, increasing the number of member states, we can work out from the flags that this patch dates to sometime between 1980 and 1986.
