'First Man on the Moon' 45rpm Vinyl Record Narrated by Hugh Downs
A 45 rpm vinyl record, produced by the Observer newspaper in conjunction with MGM Merchandising Corporation. It was given away to commemorate the successful Moon landing carried out by the crew of Apollo 11.The record is narrated by American TV presenter Hugh Downs and contains recordings between the Apollo 11 crew and mission control. Downs was most famous for co-hosting the NBC News programme, ‘Today’ from 1962 to 1971. The record also includes President John F. Kennedy’s famous space speeches where he set the USA on a path to the Moon.
The front of the record sleeve depicts the Lunar Lander touching down on the Moon’s surface. The rear of the sleeve shows the plaque that the Apollo 11 crew left on the Moon, declaring that they ‘…Came In Peace For All Mankind’, alongside the signatures of the three crew members and President Nixon. There is also a brief quote from President Kennedy’s "We choose to go to the Moon" speech at Rice University.
