Gemini 6 Mission Patch

Gemini 6 Mission Patch

This Gemini 6 mission patch was designed to commemorate Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford's flight in 1965.

The patch design includes a large number 6 traced out amongst a series of stars. The GTA-6 label stands for Gemini - Titan - Agena, with Titan being the launch vehicle for the Gemini missions. Agena was the name of the target vehicle (Gemini Agena Target Vehicle) that the crew were scheduled to rendezvous and dock with as one of their mission objectives. However, the Agena was destroyed shortly after its launch, so Gemini 6 had to be postponed. A new mission plan was developed, which would instead see Gemini 6 rendezvous with the Gemini 7 mission. This patch still depicts the Agena Target Vehicle, but later patches changed the design to include a Gemini spacecraft instead.

This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
