Gemini 8 Mission Patch
Gemini 8 Mission Patch
This Gemini 8 mission patch was designed to commemorate Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott's mission in 1966.The patch displays the two astronaut's names alongside the twin stars of the Gemini constellation shining light onto a prism, which in turn is splitting the light to spell out the mission name. Gemini is represented by its Zodiac sign 'II', alongside the Roman numerals for '8' - 'VIII'. The graphic design idea behind the patch was that Gemini 8 was going to carryout the complete spectrum of Gemini mission objectives - rendezvous, docking, EVAs (spacewalks), and experiments - which was represented by the complete spectrum of colours coming from the prism in the patch design. Unfortunately, Gemini 8 ran into serious problems during the mission - leading to an early abort and a failure to complete all of its objectives.
This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
