Mercury 9 Commemorative Mission Patch
Mercury 9 Commemorative Mission Patch
Mercury patches like this one were only created after the missions for commemorative purposes. There were no official Mercury patch designs. Instead companies like A-B Emblem produced collectable mementos, like this one, in the 1970s. A-B Emblem began work with NASA in the 1960s, before signing an exclusive contract to produce official patches for spaceflight missions in 1970.Mercury 9 was the first flight for astronaut Gordo Cooper and, although his mission did not have an official patch, it was his later Gemini 5 mission that has the distinction of being NASA's first official mission patch.
