OAST-1 Solar Technology Patch
OAST-1 Solar Technology Patch
This commemorative patch was produced to mark the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST) NASA Solar Technology demonstration, which was carried out aboard the Space Shuttle mission STS-41D in 1984.The patch shows the Space Shuttle Discovery with the experimental solar array (OAST-1) deployed from its cargo bay. OAST-1 was a technology demonstration of different types of solar cells, showcasing how a large extendable solar array could be used in space. This helped develop the type of solar panels used aboard the International Space Station. Before it was deployed, OAST-1 folded away to a height of less than 18 centimetres - before extending to a fully deployed height of 31.5 metres.
This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
