The lecture was delivered at a joint meeting of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society. It took place in London on 29 June 1972.

The proceedings contain an overview of NASA’s achievements and programmes for its second decade in space. It is divided into the headings: Space Science, Manned Space Flight, Applications and Space Technology. It includes details of Skylab and the Space Shuttle.

It details NASA’s plans for the next decade in space after the Moon landings. It states that NASA will send probes to provide the first look at Mercury, the asteroid belt and Jupiter. It also states they will send probes to orbit and soft land on Mars to look for life.
