Charles Walker was confirmed by NASA as the first industrial payload specialist in 1983. He went on to rack up a total of three space flights – accumulating 20 days experience in space, travelling 8.2 million miles. Despite never being an employee of NASA, Walker flew aboard the three Space Shuttle missions STS-41-D, STS-51-D and STS-61-B. This included being a crew member on the Space Shuttle Discovery’s first flight. Walker shared a patent with McDonnell Douglas for the Continuous Flow Electrophoresis Device (CFES), which he accompanied on-board his three space flights. CFES separated solutions of biological materials by passing electric fields through them and was used in experiments into diabetes treatments.
