Bonnie Jeanne Dunbar was born 3 March 1949 in Sunnyside, Washington. She became a NASA astronaut in August 1981 and went on to complete five space flights, logging more than 50 days in space. She served as a mission specialist on STS 61-A in 1985, STS-32 in 1990, and STS-71 in 1995, and was the Payload Commander on STS-50 in 1992, and STS-89 in 1998.

In the photograph Dunbar's flight suit displays the mission insignia for STS-89. This mission was the eighth time the American Space Shuttle docked with the Russian space station Mir.
