Space Achievement Commemorative Issue 'A Decade of Achievement' First Day Cover
The commemorative stamp was produced in 1971 to mark the 10th anniversary of John Glenn’s Project Mercury flight, where he became the first American to orbit the Earth. This stamp has been affixed to an envelope and franked to mark the first day of issue at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 2 August 1971. Commonly known as First Day Covers, these presentation envelopes or postcards are highly collectable for philatelists – people who study stamps. The stamp’s release coincided with the Apollo 15 Moon landing and was designed to celebrate ten years of accomplishments made by the United States in the field of space exploration. The stamp depicts the Lunar Roving Vehicle, which was first used during Apollo 15. This allowed the astronauts the travel further distances across the lunar surface.
