STS-41D Mission Patch
STS-41D Mission Patch
This mission patch commemorates the first spaceflight of the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1984. The crew aboard the mission were Henry Hartsfield, Michael Coats, Richard Mullane, Steven Hawley, Judith Resnik, and Charles Walker. The patch depicts the Space Shuttle with an experimental solar array poking out from its cargo bay. This technology was later used for the solar panels on the International Space Station. The patch design also features twelve stars - to indicate that this was the twelfth Shuttle mission - whilst a ghost ship in the background represents the many 'Discovery' named ships from history.
This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
