STS-5 Mission Patch
STS-5 Mission Patch
This mission patch was designed by space artist Robert McCall, who worked with the crew of STS-5 on the finished look. The crew of Vance Brand, Robert Overmyer, Joseph Allen, and William Lenoir became NASA's first four person crew in 1982 aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. The patch depicts the Space Shuttle deploying two communications satellites out of its cargo bay doors - with this mission being the first Shuttle mission to deploy satellites, marking the change from test flights to operational Shuttle missions. The patch also has a five pointed star in reference to this being the fifth Shuttle mission.
This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
