STS-51A Mission Patch

STS-51A Mission Patch

This patch commemorates the Space Shuttle mission STS-51A and was designed by the artist Stephen Hustvedt in collaboration with the crew of Frederick Hauck, David Walker, Joseph Allen, Anna Lee Fisher, and Dale Gardner.

The mission patch design features the Space Shuttle Discovery flying in front of an American eagle. Above stars feature in a black background, whilst two satellites with trails streak across the scene. The mission STS-51A deployed two communications satellites, whilst also recovering two malfunctioning satellites - Palapa B2 and Westar 6 - and bringing them back to Earth.

This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
