STS-51B Mission Patch
STS-51B Mission Patch
This mission patch was designed by the daughter of crew member Don Lind. Alongside Lind on Space Shuttle mission STS-51B were Robert Overmyer, Frederick Gregory, Norman Thagard, William Thornton, Lodewijk van den Berg, and Taylor Wang.Carol Ann Lind came up with a patch design that included the Space Shuttle Challenger flying in front of the stars of the constellation Pegasus, with an outline of the winged horse from Greek mythology in the background. Below, an American flag sits over the Earth with the names of the crew around the outside. The Shuttle's cargo bay is open to reveal Spacelab, the European Space Agency designed laboratory, which was being flown on this mission.
This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
