STS-51C Mission Patch
STS-51C Mission Patch
This mission patch was designed for the Space Shuttle mission STS-51C and includes the names of the crew; Ken Mattingly, Loren Shriver, Ellison Onizuka, James Buchli, and Gary Payton. The mission, flown by Space Shuttle Discovery, was the first Shuttle mission dedicated to the US Department of Defense. This means that much of the details of the flight are classified. The patch design reflects this with little detail about the flight itself. It features the Department of Defense insignia of an eagle with arrows in its talons. Above, five stars represent the five astronauts aboard the mission, whilst the Space Shuttle can be seen with three trails of red, white and blue - to mark that this was Discovery's third spaceflight.
This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
