STS-51D Mission Patch

STS-51D Mission Patch

This patch was designed for the Space Shuttle mission STS-51D, with the crew names detailed on the patch including Korol Bobko, Donald Williams, Rhea Seddon, David Griggs, Jeffrey Hoffman, Charles Walker, and Jake Garn.

The patch design includes the Space Shuttle Discovery orbiting Earth, trailed by a Colonial American flag. The flag symbolises America's progress and achievements since colonial times and how the desire to explore has been a trait of the American people from even before it became a country. The STS-51D mission was notable for being the first mission to fly a serving American Senator (Jake Garn) in space.

This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
