STS-61A Mission Patch
STS-61A Mission Patch
This mission patch was designed for the STS-61A Space Shuttle Challenger spaceflight in 1985. The mission was the first dedicated West German Spacelab mission. Spacelab was a reusable laboratory flown on Shuttles for experimentation in space, developed by the European Space Agency. As the first Space Shuttle mission largely paid for and operated by another nation, the German flag features prominently on the patch alongside the US flag. The Shuttle can be seen with its Cargo Bay doors open to display where Spacelab was located. This was the only Shuttle flight with eight astronauts aboard, including two Germans - as well as the first Dutch person in space, Wubbo Ockels. Ockels name has a small ESA logo next to it on the patch.
This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
