STS-61C Mission Patch

STS-61C Mission Patch

The STS-61C mission patch was designed by the crew of Robert Gibson, Charles Bolden, George Nelson, Steven Hawley, Franklin Chang-Diaz, Bill Nelson, and Robert Cenker. This was the Space Shuttle Columbia's seventh mission and was notable for the fact that two future NASA Administrators were aboard - with Charles Bolden and Bill Nelson both going on to head up the American space agency.

The patch design was led by Gibson, although the whole crew had an input. It shows Columbia during re-entry, with colourful shockwaves. Below is the American flag, whilst above the constellation Draco can be seen.

This particular patch was part of a collection of patches acquired by British-born professor of endocrine and metabolic surgery Anthony Goode, during his years working with NASA’s Life Sciences Division.
