Aardman and ESA Shaun the Sheep Mission Patch

Aardman and ESA Shaun the Sheep Mission Patch

This mission patch was produced to commemorate the historic spaceflight of Shaun the Sheep in 2022 aboard the Artemis 1 mission to the Moon.

In partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), Aardman's Shaun the Sheep became the first European to fly around the Moon as a passenger on Artemis 1, the first flight of NASA’s Orion spacecraft to the Moon. ESA provided the European Service Module for the mission, which provides air, electricity, and propulsion for a spacecraft NASA and ESA plan to use to return humans to the Moon.

The patch design features ESA's deep space blue border, with a red inner ring representing ESA's science and exploration goals. Shaun can be seen examining the Moon, above his inspirational motto for the mission, 'Reach for the staaars'. The stars in the background represent all his friends back on Earth. Shaun was joined aboard Artemis 1 by a Snoopy doll and mannequins designed to test the systems for a future human mission to the Moon.
