Sunday Express Magazine 1 July 1984 - Training To Be Britain's First Spaceman

This Sunday Express magazine features a story about the project to launch a first Brit into space in 1984 - 7 years before Helen Sharman became the first UK astronaut.

The project was backed by the UK military, as part of a plan for the US Space Shuttle to launch British military satellites. The successful candidate would fly aboard the Shuttle to act as a mission specialist. However, the Challenger disaster of 1986 saw the cancellation of the project.

Four candidates had been selected for the project, each vying to be the first Brit in space; Major Richard Farrimond of the Royal Signals, Commander Peter Longhurst of the Royal Navy, Squadron Leader Nigel Wood of the RAF, and Christpher Holmes who was a Ministry of Defence civilian specialist.
