Palitoy Action Man

An original action man from 1966 - this toy became a huge seller in the UK. As the world was following the events of the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, Action Man was introduced to the market with instant success. With many different uniforms and types of Action Man to buy, it was no surprise that the manufacturers also made an astronaut version from 1967 onwards.

These favourite children’s toys can trace their history back to the American G.I. Joe dolls. Whilst working for the Coalville based toy manufacturer Palitoy, sales director Hal Belton showed off a G.I. Joe doll that he had picked up in the USA. Palitoy realised that there was room for a similar doll to be introduced to the UK market - eventually leading to the birth of Action Man.
