SHL-10 Orlan Spacesuit Communication Headset
SHL-10 Orlan Spacesuit Communication Headset
SHL-10 Spacesuit Communications Headset, designed to be worn inside an Orlan EVA Spacesuit. Black leather earpads connect by a nylon mesh skull-cap with a microphone mouthpiece. Similar headsets are used in the Sokol KV-2 Rescue Spacesuit.Allowing astronauts/cosmonauts to communicate with the ground or with their spacecraft whilst on a spacewalk, is vitally important. Development of skull-cap headsets with inbuilt microphones and speakers have provided a dedicated system to allow two-way communication with mission control, or with the spacecraft during a spacewalk. The headset is put on before floating into the Orlan Spacesuit through the backpack hatch, after which the headset is plugged into the suit allowing radio communication with the spacecraft - which in turn can be relayed back to mission control.
