Where Do We Get Our Coffee Beans from?

There is nothing like starting your day with a good quality coffee, and as I write this my mind is already starting to think about that second magical cup of ‘go juice’.

Secretly I’m hoping that my colleague Claire (aka the Face of the National Space Centre) will offer to head downstairs to our Boosters café and treat everyone in the team to a hot beverage, or maybe it is my turn to get the round in.

Speaking of Boosters, did you know that our coffee beans come from less than 15 miles from our front door?

Coffee Inrepid

An Intrepid Coffee Roaster

For over 8 years we have worked with St Martin’s Coffee Roasters, who actually roast all of their ethically sourced beans in Great Glen. They also have a very popular coffee shop in the heart of the city, in an area called (strangely enough) St Martin’s Yard. Bonus National Space Centre Fact: the awesome Craft Burger pop-up in the evenings is a regular haunt of many of our team members.

After a busy day enjoying the National Space Centre, or working away in the offices, energy levels can drop, so knowing that we have great coffee on site to refuel the engines is always good to remember.

After lots of deliberating and tasting by our Catering team, we settled on serving a brand of St Martin’s Coffee called ‘Intrepid’.  Described by the team at St Martin’s as “a coffee that can enjoyed by all,” Intrepid was their first signature espresso and we have found that it always goes down well with visitors, whether they be coffee connoisseurs, caffeine fiends or casual coffee drinkers.

But it doesn’t stop with the excellent quality of their coffee. Over the years, we have built up a great relationship with St Martin’s. We are very fond of our city, and it was important to us when choosing our supplier that we choose a local business to work with; not only does is directly support Leicestershire-based industries, but it also reduces the distance required to travel to make deliveries, which in turn helps to reduce our carbon footprint.

Speaking of which, as well as being in our neck of the woods, it was also very important to us that the supplier we ended up working with also takes sustainability and the health of our Home Planet as seriously as we do.

St Martin's proudly sources their coffee ethically and has a focus on working with coffee producers who “treat their environment and people with respect and fairness”.

When dropping in to replenish our stock of coffee, the team make use of reusable tubs to transport the coffee beans and avoid using wasteful one-use plastic methods. Once finished, they then take these away with them so they can be used again and again.

It can be the smallest of things that makes a day out memorable, even something as simple as a cup of good quality coffee.

[Postscript: After writing this blog post, Elliott decided it was time to switch to drinking decaff for a while… which we also sell in Boosters thanks to the team at St Martin’s!]
